Methanol, sometimes called wood alcohol, is a colorless, flammable liquid most often used as an industrial solvent, fuel additive, or as feed-stock for the production of other useful chemicals like formaldehyde.

It is toxic to humans and unsuitable for use in food, healthcare or cosmetics applications. Methanol has also been used as a traditional denaturant for ethanol, the product being known as “denatured alcohol”.
