Specially Denatured Alcohol (SDA) is alcohol to which denaturing materials have been added. Manufacturers may use SDA in the manufacture of any product that is not intended for human consumption. Generally, SDA is used in cosmetic products but its use extends to pharmaceuticals, chemical manufacturing, and products where SDA is the solvent or reactant. An SDA registration/permit is required to purchase SDA.

SDA (SDAG-3 in Canada) is used extensively in the production of perfumes, cosmetics, and hand sanitizer.
This product is denatured with Bitrex, an intensely bitter but odorless compound that renders the alcohol undrinkable. A permit may be required to use this product.
